2025 2Q Rates: Overall Slight Increase

Matanuska Electric Association (MEA) members will see a small increase in their electric bills starting April 1, 2025, due to a slight rise in the Cost of Power Adjustment (COPA). While base rates remain unchanged for the second quarter, the COPA will increase by half a cent per kilowatt-hour(kWh), resulting in an overall average bill increase of approximately $3.18 per month, or 2.09%, for a typical member using 642 kWh.

The COPA, which is adjusted quarterly and subject to Regulatory Commission of Alaska (RCA) review, reflects the fluctuating costs of fuel and purchased power. For the second quarter, MEA’s projected fuel costs have decreased; however, this was offset by an increase in purchased power—particularly hydroelectric power—and a rise in the balancing account. The balancing account adjustment was necessary due to lower-than-expected energy sales during a warmer-than-usual first quarter.

There are no changes this quarter to MEA’s base rate. The base rate—comprised of the energy and demand charges—covers the essential costs of delivering power to members' homes and businesses.

MEA evaluates its rates quarterly to ensure they remain within RCA-approved guidelines and continue to reflect changing market and operational conditions. Member rates can be influenced by various factors, including electric use, fuel prices, weather, and broader economic trends.
