Landlord Agreement

The purpose of a Landlord/Tenant Agreement is to avoid disconnection of service of a rental unit. When a tenant signs out of a rental unit, an MEA customer service representative will automatically transfer the service back into the landlord's name. In addition, with the agreement in place, the landlord will save the $15 records fee for transferring the service. MEA does not contact the landlord at this time as we rely on the landlord to "keep track" of the tenant(s).

MEA will request a final meter reading from the tenant who signs out of the meter serving the rental unit. If the tenant does not call in a reading, MEA will attempt to contact the landlord for the reading. Should the tenant or landlord fail to provide a reading, we will make a field trip to read the meter and the landlord will be charged a $30 fee for this service.

Also, when the tenant is signed into the account, should the tenant fall behind on payments and become subject to disconnection for nonpayment, the landlord will be notified and may elect to assume responsibility from that date. However, MEA does reserve the right to disconnect service when either the landlord or tenants are delinquent in payment.
